Visual Arts Scotland Biennial 2025

The Thread That Pulls; Some things do not let us go. A colour that returns in every sketch, a fragment of cloth that refuses to fray, a question that won’t be answered.

This exhibition gathers artists and makers who follow the pull; whether it’s the tug of memory or the weight of a material, the slow draw of an unfinished thought. Here, the thread is both visible and
invisible: stitch, line, story, bond. It connects, knots, loops back. It asks for patience and looks to reward attention.

I have a piece going into the show Arisaema concinnium ‘Triptych’

Influenced by the groundbreaking photography of Karl Blossfeldt, which focused on symmetry and structure, and the Gothic designs of H.F. Geiger, this illustration in Japanese ink paste is of an Arisaema that I grew last year. The young shoots of Arisaema concinnium unfurl from protective coverings, creating an arching form viewed from three vantage points. The plant structure and pattern are examples of natural design in action, camouflaging the plant at forest edges and off-putting to predators, a contemporary presentation of a centuries-old art form, botanical illustration.
